A person can move from county custody to state custody, so the correct search system changes after commitment and receiving intake.

How to find a state prisoner

1. Choose the state where the person is likely committed.
2. Open the state’s official corrections locator or agency-designated pathway.
3. Use the state-specific DOC, SID, DIN, AIS, or other accepted identifier when known.
4. Confirm the status and facility from the current official result.
5. Use county or federal search when the state system clearly does not apply.

Why facility verification matters

Prisons can close, rename, merge, change mission, change operator, or move public contact functions. A former facility name can remain in search results long after the official system changes. Publishing an old address or an invented generic facility page can send mail, calls, or visitors to the wrong place and can misdirect an inmate search.
