Check the custody level first
- Use a county, city, regional, or local jail method for a recent arrest or pretrial detention.
- Use a state Department of Corrections locator after a confirmed state commitment or transfer.
- Use the BOP locator for supported federal custody records from 1982 to present.
- Recheck the previous and destination systems during a transfer window.
Reduce search errors
Start with the legal name and remove uncertain optional filters. Use an agency-issued booking, inmate, DOC, SID, DIN, AIS, SBI, PFN, or BOP number only in the system that issued it. Compare multiple identifiers before relying on a same-name result.
Common no-result reasons
- Booking or intake is still processing
- The person is in another county, city, regional jail, hospital, court holding area, or contracted facility
- The name, suffix, date, or number type is incorrect
- The record is current-custody only and the person was released or transferred
